Crossroads.

1/29/2015

Approximately 1.5 years ago I found myself at a crossroads and stepped out of the classroom to start Flipping Physics. It has been exhilarating, exhausting, educational, entertaining and enjoyable, however, it has not been profitable.  In addition to that, I miss being in the classroom.  I miss student interaction.  Heck, I miss non-electronic, human communication.

I am at another crossroads. I am placing one foot firmly back in the classroom. Today, I began teaching Physics part-time at Community High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the city where I live. This will allow me to keep one foot stepping to the world as Flipping Physics. The two roles should compliment one another well.

I am very thankful for all the help and encouragement everyone has provided me. I hope you are as excited for me as I am excited for this new, dual role.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion. Many thanks to Kevin Zhang, today's Flipping Physics Correspondent in China and to Ari Morris for letting me use a video of my kids at The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum from 2007.  That’s right, this video spans the globe, from my driveway to China!

Experimentally Graphing Uniformly Accelerated Motion

We’ve hypothetically graphed uniformly accelerated motion, however, I thought it would be good to experimentally investigate it as well.

The Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

"If the attitude of quantum mechanics is correct, in the strong sense that a description of the substructure underlying experience more complete than the one it provides is not possible, then there is no substantive physical world, in the usual sense of this term.  The conclusion here is not the weak conclusion that there may not be a substantive physical world but rather that there definitely is not a substantive physical world." Henry Stapp quoted in The Dancing Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav

Thank you to Keith Hughes for sharing this book with me. I'm loving it!

A meandering post.

I feel like I am making a giant pyramid of physics knowledge. Some days I stand back and look at what I have already created, one carefully crafted block of physics learning at a time, and I am amazed. Some days I look at how much it will take to make the rest of the pyramid and get discouraged. (poor analogy, because the pyramid will never be finished, however, I’m still running with it.) A few people walk up to the pyramid, marvel at its elegance and wander away having learned a bit of physics. Some days I get repeat visitors. There is a general trend toward more and more visitors, however, it’s hard to know how many will show up on a given day. Some people stop to thank me for its creation. Sometimes I learn their names. Some of their names are unrecognizable to me such as 石可乐. A modicum leave donations to aid in the creation of the pyramid; the majority do not. It makes me happy to help people out. I just hope someday there will be enough visitors, though I don’t know what “enough” is.

Summing the Forces is Vector Addition

When Newton’s 2nd Law is introduced and we begin summing the forces, students often think it something entirely new. It is not. Summing the forces is vector addition.

A giant thank you to Frances Luke Accord for letting me use their song “In The Water” from their album “Kandote”. They make wonderful music; you should really check them out.

Yep, I make physics videos in the hope that you can learn physics.  If you are a physics teacher, I am very hopeful that you will want to use them to help flip your physics class.
